How to commission an artwork

How to commission a portrait or a painting

Determine what media you would like (painting, sculpture, photograph etc) and how much you are expecting to spend.

Contact your preferred artist, found either online, through exhibitions or by personal recommendation and ensure that you are happy with your early discussions. You should then agree a description of the art work commissioned, price, media, size, ownership and copyright etc and time scale.

If review stages are agreed, check that you are happy with progress, and voice any reservations, but be aware that ‘work in progress’ is just that, and trust that your chosen artist is creating a work for you, not by you.

Usually a simple contract will be drawn up between the artist and a deposit paid.

  1. Yes that’s pretty much how I work. I quite often email the client some of the works in progress stages and ask if they would like anything in particular changing with the painting, or indeed added like a bird or a figure, if it’s a landscape. It’s good to keep in contact that way I think :-)
